I agree that they should not be allowed in grappling competitions for
beginners as the most obvious counter (= punching the guy in the face
while he is controlling your arm/wrist with both hands) is not allowed
either.

For experienced/pro grapplers in higher belt or experience categories
I see no problem though, it's very rare that someone gets caught in a
wrist lock at that level anyway. I'm sure Jacare goes for an arm bar
or heel hook with the same intensity he goes for a wrist lock anyway.

Finger locks should not be allowed in any competition imo. They are
not fight enders (I had someone dislocate one of my fingers during BJJ
rolling, damaging tendons and ligaments, and I still tapped him
afterwards), require little skill and will cause injuries that will
keep may people (recreational and pro athletes) out of training and
completions.
