Based on the election results...

It seems to me that the democrats would have won the white house 
regardless of who ran for either side.  It seems to me that it was a 
universal anti-Bush sentiment particularly looking at the legislative 
results (and the ads here for the democratic candidates featured strong 
attempts to associate the republican candidates to Bush.)
