Early in the season after both Bergeron and Fernandez went down, I
recall an article (in the Globe?) that stated that if the Bruins
designated that they were out for the season, they would still be paid
but not count against the cap this year. Is this correct? By that time
it was patently obvious that Fernandez was not needed and his $4M salary
would certainly give them flexibility to bring in an offensive talent.
Ditto with Bergeron, the odds of his returning this year were so
marginal, they could have bit the bullet and replaced him with another
talented body. The only inference I can draw from this is that they
could have spent another $7M to upgrade the team, but didn't want to
spend the money. Jacobs-paranoia has finally infected me as well!
