Are tournaments like the Hockey World Champion****ps Worth It?

by Brewer720 <nospambsfan@[EMAIL PROTECTED] > May 8, 2008 at 08:05 AM

I was reading the other day that Tim Thomas either tweaked a groin, or
hurt a knee playing in the Worlds, and then I read this morning that
Jeff Halpern blew out a knee and won't be available to play for the
Lightning until maybe the all-star break of next season.

So my question is, what do you think of NHL players participating in
tournaments like this, or even the Olympics? My take on the World
Champion****ps is that it's kind of a farce. I mean, it's played while
the Stanley Cup playoffs are going on, which means that some of the
best players in the world are busy playing for the cup. How can a
country be properly represented when some of it's best players are
busy in another competition? Also, if you were a GM would you want
your players playing in a competition where they could sustain a
potentially career ending injury?

My own opinion is that if I were a GM I'd discourage my players from
participating in any outside tournaments (Worlds, Olympics). IMHO the
Olympics should be for amateur athletes anyway. I never bought into
the concept of these "dream teams" playing in the Olympics.
