DETROIT (TICKER) —Mats Sundin may be touring various NHL cities, but
Detroit Red
Wings general manager Ken Holland told the Detroit News that he is not
interested in
signing the veteran center.
“I don’t know Mats Sundin’s travel plans, but we’re not signing Mats
Sundin,” Holland
told the newspaper on Wednesday.
Holland’s primary order of business for the defending Stanley Cup champion
Red Wings
is re-signing 46-year-old defenseman Chris Chelios, blue-liner Kyle
Quincey and veteran
right wing Darren McCarty - which he is close to doing, according to the
News. A three-
time Norris Trophy winner, Chelios completed his 24th NHL season in
2007-08, registering
three goals, nine assists and 36 penalty minutes in 69 games.
Should the Red Wings re-sign the trio, they will be over the salary cap
and unable to
afford the services of Sundin, who earlier this offseason received a
two-year, $20 million
contract offer from the Vancouver Canucks.
Although the Toronto Maple Leafs missed the playoffs for the third
straight season, the
37-year-old Sundin had a solid campaign in 2007-08, leading the team in
goals (32), assists
(46) and points (78).
