IME, July is by far the worst. At dusk, you're in the tent or covered in
either chemicals or mesh. Or both. August ain't great with respect to
bugs,
but they've usually waned a bit. My September trips are often blissfully
bug-free.
It all depends on weather, of course. This year has been a little bit
rainier than the last few, so the bugs may have altered their schedules.
Either way, IRNP is likely a bit much logistically for a short trip, but
as
far as a place to solo, it's great. You have to try to get lost, the
crowds
are miniscule compared to the more popular parks, no hibernating animals
(of
which I'm aware, anyway) live on the island, and the fact that it's an
island increases the safety factor substantially, IMO.
