I saw plenty of people wearing boots in the Southwest when I went
hiking there in the summer 2006.  I wore a lightweight pair of boots
myself most of the time.  The trails down the Grand Canyon rim can be
rocky and ankle sup****t can be useful to reduce the chance of ankle
sprains.  There are some very lightweight boots which provide adequate
ventilation during high temps.  I hiked up Angels Landing in Zion NP
wearing a pair of Nike Air Zoom Tallac+ boots.  The ankle sup****t was
very helpful a few times as I scrambled (and sometimes landed hard) on
the sandstone.

I just got back from the Pacific NW where it was unseasonably warm.  I
saw people coming down Mt Rainier in plastic shell mountaineering
boots - it was paved trail much of the way down.  Of course I saw
others who had strapped their mountaineering boots to their packs to
be replaced with sneakers and sometimes flip-flops as soon as they got
off the snow/ice.
