My wife and I stayed at a little "A" frame cabin (think wood tent) in
Misty Fjords wilderness area (out of Ketchikan) for a week and loved
it. Very rustic, no amenities. No other people. No way to contact
the outside world- maybe a Sat phone would work these days. This is
south Alaska, so maybe your first or last ****t of call. It's about
3,500 sq miles and had ~12 cabins for reservation. No roads, no
improved campsites. We stayed on one of the lakes (14 miles long- one
camp site!). That was many years ago and things may have changed. If
you go this route you will need at least a 12 gauge shot gun with bear
load or a 30.06- the forest service will not let you in with less.
Again, this may have changed. Check with the float plane service.
Most will let you bring significant gear and will rent you a motor for
the skiff (wish we had done that). I can still taste the trout and
salmon! We saw bears, trumpeter swans, and numerous other charismatic
megafauna. You will need muck boots if you plan to hike as it is
muskeg around the lakes. No maintained trails.
