A time existed when people wanted to be elite.  Educated.  It's become
fa****onable to be anti-intellectual.  Dave Brower wrote a bit about this
problem when he was in the 10th Mtn. Division just after he got dropped
into Italy.  They were among the WWII elite along with the paratroopers
(now they had jump boots), frogmen (UDT), OSS, etc.

In fact, his successors who wear Green or Black Berets would definitely
be called elite, but I doubt that they would take too much time
discussing foot wear (you might get 1-2 sentences).  Some people deserve 
to be declared noobs, newbies, and tourons.
