In the US, the term "wetlands" has gained currency, enough so that
while "bog" or "peatland" probably wouldn't get the attention of many
people, calling those same areas "wetlands" could arouse people to
rally for preservation, conservation, etc., even if the wetlands/bogs
in question will be rarely visited or used by people.  Even
development-crazed Southern California has battled against Steven
Spielberg's attempt to build a studio in the Ballona Wetlands

"Flow country" is perhaps more descriptive, but "wetlands" is a handy
term covering a wide variety of places, both saltwater and freshwater.
