I usually throw out the crappy laces that come with boots and make my own
using some 3/16" nylon cord (about 1/8" when stretched) from the climbing
section at REI. I work a little wax (or snow-seal) into the cord to help
the knot hold better, then cut it to length and fuse the ends with a
cigarette lighter (being careful not to start the wax burning).
It stays tied better than any bootlace I've ever bought in the store,
doesn't stretch, and usually outlasts the boots.
