Sounds like you've got a mismatch between the laces and the knot you're
using. You need a better knot!

Personally, I use a knot not shown there, that I learned from "Chapman's
Nautical Guides - Knots" which is written by Brion Toss.

It's known as the extra secure shoelace knot. It's easy, fast, and can be
released by pulling on the ends, like a regular shoelace knot.
