Panel 9 -- Names for climbs which sound good.

A frequent topic.
Names for climbs which sound good.

What sounds good? Who knows?
It's a combination of macho sicko climber humor and other factors.
Some people regard being truthful or descriptive as im****tant.
Other's don't. Go figure.

These climb names are noted to have special significance
in the climbing community. They contrast to names like
	The [NEWS] {Face|Ridge|Couloir|Arete|Rib|Buttress|Corner|ad nausem}
Not for beginners.

Noted in Roper and other climbing guides:

	Farewell to Arms (Hemingway)

Alive at Leads (you need to appreciate the Who)

Anchors Away (for the party killed trying to do it)

This is a list of a few names, not just climbs.
No attempt has been made to localize these route names as in some cases
they appear in multiple places like Twin Peaks, Twin Bridges or North
Twin.
Plagerism is, in this case, untraceable. This is not a recommendation
to copy. Only to note that it happens, and it exists.

	Gone in Sixty Seconds (film)
	If Looks Could Kill (film)

Who names?
Unofficially: the first ascent party
Officially the Geographic Board of Names.

Musical variations are popular.

From Comedy routines:

My Dogma Got Run Over by my Karma

"Float Like a Butterfly, Land Like a Tomato"
	Ice climb, Lake Willowby, VT.

in about 87 on a cold Winter's Joshua Tree day Rob Slater, Randy Leavitt
and I put up two routes on a very rectangular lone block, We agreed that
the block would be known as the refrigerator given it's shape and site and
the conditions under which it was first climbed Randy re****ted the routes
as "Right" and "left"
much to my chagrin... I wanted to call them "Bill" and "Perry."

One of favorite name storys:
The night before Phil Warrender went to Suicide rock to put up the
left-most route on the wall, while discussing home improvements he asked a
friend: " are you going to put in indoor-outdoor carpet?" what he really
said in his drunkenness was " are you going to put in Arpa Carpa?" so is
the route named in honor of ten or so minutes of laughter.

Also
areas sometimes get themes
in the needles it's mystical or maritime if you are playing along
formations Witch, Warlock and, Necromancer
Routes: "The Titanic"
traverse to the mid route crux via "Women and Children First"
"Sea of Tranquility" ain't bad either

AND there are the puns
Tahquitz Rock has "From Bad Traverse" what's verse than that?

AND retorts
"Pink Floyd" at Stoney Point, "Pink Royd" at Suicide
"White Maidens Walkaway",, "Black Harlots Layaway"

AND the sublime
"Grand Illusion"

The Rude
"Pajama Glue"

The drugged
"Oz." That route is OUNCE as in drug dome NOT Ozzzzz as in Alice in
Wonderland.

it never ends
already too verbose as you once said so tata for now Eugene.
Best
Ed

Lactic Acid Bath
The Worlds Hardest 5.12
Jane Fondas Total Body Workout
Pockets Of Resistance
Anal Clenching Adventures
She Got The Bosch And I Got Drilled
Damn The LayBack, Full Stem Ahead!

A few nice ones that come to mind from the Restaurant in Mpumalanga
(the major haunt for s****t climbers from the Johannesburg area):

At the He-Man Area:
	Incidently I'm Macho (19 - 5.10b)
	Actually your a wimp (22 - 5.11a)
(At the point where Incidently I'm Macho traverses left
for a metre or 2, Actually Your a Wimp shoots strait up at grade 22.)

The Coven has a nice theme, with route names like:
	Shout at the Devil (20 - 5.10c)
	Howling in Hell
	Howling in Hades
	Devil's Concubine
	Route of all Evil
	Tried to go to Heaven
(The route setter was heading for the headwall
groove, but ...... _he went the other way_.)
	Babies' Blood gives me Gas
	Screaming Demons

and more other ones like that.

"Pockets of Resistance", reminds me of another
route name I have seen: "Pocket Rocket".

(Conversions from South African grades to the YDS are approximate.)
{that's fine --ed.}
