After a long search we've bought a 2008 Chevy 3500HD (crew cab, 4WD,
long bed, DRW, Duramax, Allison six speed). It was used with 7500
miles. It's in "showroom" condition. I don't the guy (a non-smoker)
I bought if from ever had anything in the bed.
We had a B&W TurnoverBall hitch and a RhinoLining bed liner put in. It
goes to the shop on Tuesday for installation of the transfer fuel tank
and a new plug on the trailer.
We picked the Chevy over Dodge and Ford after a long search for
information. It's very difficult to evaluate one ton duallies as
there are very few sources of objective information. Some of the best
was found on some RV forums. The RV community seems to pull a lot
more (miles and weight) than the equine community.
I didn't want a diesel. The current split between unleaded regular
and diesel locally is running from $.90-$1.15. Maintenance also seems
higher. But GM will only put an 8.1L engine in a truck on very
special order. The standard engines have less towing capacity than I
had with my '99 K3500. That left the Ford 350SD with a V-10 Triton
engine. These were more available, but there were none in our area
(the closest was about 130 miles away). After visiting more than a
dozen dealers and looking at the models available we picked the Chevy.
So far, so good. We've put about 200 miles on it and drives very
well. I'll know about pulling capacity on Tuesday with I take the
trailer over to the shop.
