In this case, it is most likely *not* to do with non-veg. The blogger
writes that he changed his name to a Christian-sounding one, and he
was given the apartment. Most Christians are also non-vegetarians. :-)

That said, housing is actually one area in which cosmopolitan,
developed, nations like the US also face discrimination. It hasn't
ever happened to me, but I have witnessed it several times. And
that too not in some podunk town in the middle of nowhere, but in
cosmopolitan places like LA and San Diego.

Heck, even my current landlady went over the "cooking odors"
clause in the lease in particular detail looking straight at me. I
didn't even notice it, but my wife is willing to bet that if I weren't
a
curry-muncher, that wouldn't have been the case.

There are also frequent radio commercials about this -
discrimination in renting an apartment/house is strictly illegal. I
don't think the concerned agencies/law-firms will be
advertising so much if it weren't a frequent occurence. This is
one particular problem for which people won't go to court even in
such a litigious country... Just not worth it. Just move over to the
next building and keep looking.
