Is there a distinction in the minds of most. I mean when is a league
considered to be official competition and no longer just organized
pick up. When everyone has matching uniforms? when there are
referees present? when? One person put forth the idea that its("pick-
up") when anyone, no matter what skill level is allowed to "join the
fun". Ive always thought ultimate to be a refless form of little
league for adults. we played games back in the day that were
unofficial games against other teams, dont remember who reffed/umped
them, but back then we called those games scrimmages.
Would such a label, distinction, or perception actually hurt ultimates
chances of moving up to the next level.......that level being
transitioning into varsity status on both hs and college levels and
forming some kind of cemmercially geared pro or semi-pro league.
before last spring i hadnt been to an ultimate tourny in years (aside
from the 07 easterns finals......in which no other games were going
on) and i tell you i was SHOCKED. every team was wearing matching
unies head to toe, everything was very orderly and it really didnt
seem like an ultimate tourny at all(not a long hair or smoke puff in
sight) but rather a normal s****ting event. That is untill the actual
competition began. At that point i was taken back to the ole days.
Very little continuity, still no score boards, inconsistant time
constraints, lengthy ult-debates, you know the story. Its just
ashamed that game management strategies havent advanced with the rest
of the s****t. could refs be the missing ingredient?
