Personally I think the single point CAN be one of the most exciting
plays in the CFL, particularly when it's on the last play and there's a
1 point difference between teams. However, I don't think it's so
exciting when the returning team doesn't get a chance to return it.
I heard rumours a couple years ago that the league was thinking of
changing the rule. One of the proposals, which I thought was really
awesome, was something like:
1. if you punt/miss a FG and the ball lands out of bounds with no
chance to return it, there's no point awarded (and maybe the returning
team gets it on the 25 or something, as if the ball had hit the upright)
2. if you punt/miss a FG and the ball lands in the field of play but
the returning team fails to get it out, the kicking team gets 1 point
and the ball goes to the 35, as usual.
I don't see any big downsides to it. On a really crucial kick, it would
provide some incentive for the kicker to chip it up a bit to try and
hit the back of the end zone (in case he misses).
Thoughts?
