It's a while back now (~1983), but I remember I couldn't really 
waterstart before I started sailing small boards. Trying to learn the 
waterstart on a big, floaty HiFly 700 was nearly impossible and very 
counter-intuitive.

I just didn't get it - there was no one around to teach me at the time, 
so I hung onto the sail with both feet on the board waiting for a 
miracle to happen...

The point is that only after I got onto a board that I could sink easily 
I learned to get up in anything less than a gale.

If your regular sailing conditions warrant a short board at all, I'd get 
the smallest you can uphaul (about 100l at 155lbs).
