regarding the boom-on-tail thing:

This really concerns the first half of the water start which is mostly 
about convenience. Resting the boom on the tail works on certain 
board-rig combinations only, and people come to depend on it and have 
their vacation runined (not kidding) if only modern kit is available and 
they can't apply what they have come to depend on. Moreover, you should 
definitively not compromise your stance and setup to accomodate a 
board/rig geometry that allows you to use that crutch.

Why is it a crutch? Because a. you don't need it and b. it has inherent 
problems that can potentially cause setbacks.

To get the sail out of the water, you should NEVER have to push. Pu****ng 
a heavy sail out of the water several times a day is a recipe for 
rotator cuff injury. Besides, pu****ng the up the sail at the mast will 
usually cause the clew to catch, at which point the sail flips or gets 
buried and you have to start over again. The rig should be pulled into 
the wind and out of the water leading-edge first.

Of course, you CAN rest the boom on the tail, and if I were teaching 
waterstarts to beginners who have to do it a hundred times in a day, I'd 
suggest that, too, but as soon as you have at least partial success in 
the second half of the move (getting up onto the board), I'd suggest 
losing the crutch.
