Alan, because the mast sleeve material can stretch, the manufacturers
often add materials which stretch very little to transfer the tension
on the mast strap to the top of the sail body. Sometimes they use
laminated material for this because of it's low stretch, however,
laminates delaminate then the mast tip catches on the delamed part and
jams up the mast sleeve. I'm betting there are some frayed and broken
stitching of the mast sleeve in the area where the jam happened. It
is more common than you might think.
